Newcastle GP Services (NGPS), the GP federation for the city, was formed in 2014 in response to the Health & Social Care Act 2012. The act brought significant challenges for both the NHS as a whole and general practice. In particular, GPs needed to now work at scale, and in greater collaboration, with other local providers.

We set up NGPS because we wanted to improve patient care by strengthening the role that general practice has in providing primary care in the city.

Our Chief Executive, Christian Townend, and Dr Antony Moore (a GP at Elswick Family Practice and our former Chair) founded NGPS. We have grown to a team of clinical and non-clinical specialists working from offices in Gosforth and across practices in Newcastle.

We want to continue to protect NHS primary care services, keep care as close to home as it can be, and remain sensitive to the different needs of our diverse population.

We’re doing this by helping to provide the right conditions for partners to work together with primary care, pooling clinical expertise across our member practices and beyond. By doing this we can offer a greater range of services and improve patient access and primary care availability outside of traditional opening times.
