GP shifts in UTC/ED

At NGPS we offer two ways for GPs to work flexibly – one is through Flexipool which is practice based work, and the other is working in the UTCs/ED (Urgent Treatment Centres/Emergency Department in the Newcastle RVI hospital).

These have two separate processes for onboarding. The UTC/ED onboarding process is longer than for Flexipool partly because we have a lot of applicants, but also because it involves providing more documents so an application for an honorary contract with NuTH (Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals) can be made. Once the application is with NuTH, it can take three to four months to process.

Once onboarded, the contract for working in UTCs and ED will allow you to also work in any practice-based shift that is advertised by NGPS on Lantum (our online rota management system).

Locations of UTCs/ED

Our UTC/ED rota is across four sites – Molineux, Ponteland Road, Westgate Road (currently based at Molineux), and ED at RVI (Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital). You can choose to work across all four sites, or just ED or just the three UTC sites. The different sites have different shift timings depending on the day, but typically they are:

  • ED – 8am to 1pm, 1pm to 6pm, 6pm to 10pm
  • Molineux – 8am to 2pm, 2pm to 8pm
  • Ponteland Road– 8am to 1pm, 1pm to 6pm, 6pm to 10pm
  • Westgate Road – 9.30am to 3.30pm (Monday and Friday), 9.30am to 2.30pm (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday)

pay rate

Our pay rate is £80/hour during the week and £85/hour during the weekend and £100/hour on bank holidays. This is gross pay as the post is self -employed and is not pensionable.

For UTC/ED, we advertise our shifts on our online rota management system, Lantum. Once onboarded, members are given access to see shifts and apply for any they wish to work.

Induction

Once an honorary contract has been issued by NuTH, GPs must do an induction either at a UTC site or ED or both, depending on where you want to work. The induction is generally put on Lantum for 2 hours with an experienced GP. This will give you time to become familiar with the environment and the processes involved.  All GPs are paid a flat fee of £40 for the induction regardless of how long you stay for the induction.

Once you join our rota it is expected that you will work a minimum of one shift within a six-month period. GPs who do not work a shift over a period longer than six months will be removed from the rota.

Applying to join our rota team

Recruiting experienced GPs is essential for this service, as this work requires a high degree of clinical judgement and acumen and decision-making to ensure high quality care. We also need staff to be able to work efficiently to enable a high number of patients to be seen and re-directed or discharged, and as safely as possible.

A good working knowledge of SYSTM1 is also essential.
