Christian Townend to step down as Chief Executive of Newcastle GP Services

Christian Townend has announced that he will be leaving NGPS in late 2022 after five years as the organisation’s Chief Executive. Christian was one of the founders of the GP Federation in 2014 and has been integral to its success in supporting general practice in Newcastle.

He will be taking retirement after nearly 15 years working in healthcare in the North East; before joining NGPS he was a practice manager in the city and he also worked as part of the Newcastle North East Executive for the CCG during its early formative years. Prior to this, Christian spent 31 years in HM Forces as an Officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was awarded the Royal Red Cross by the Queen in the New Year’s Honours List in 1995.

He has played a key role in several healthcare projects across Newcastle, not least the city’s response to the pandemic. His experience was critical in establishing a Covid vaccination service that carried out more than 270,000 vaccines across all corners of the city.

During his time at NGPS, Christian has been an important voice for primary care in the North East, particularly in his role as part of Collaborative Newcastle, the city’s partnership alliance to improve the health, wealth and wellbeing of everyone in Newcastle. He has been a passionate defender of general practice and community health, leading the Federation with compassion, calmness and wit. Christian has built a strong and professional organisation, clearly capable of delivering excellent citywide patient services in the most challenging of times.

Dr Natalie Crowe, Chair of NGPS expressed her thanks and appreciation for his time at the Federation.

“Christian has played a fundamental role in supporting General Practice in Newcastle for many years and his contribution will be greatly missed. I have very much enjoyed working alongside him at NGPS and I know I speak for all of the Clinical Directors in wishing him a long and happy retirement.”
